BWSC has supported Wright-Patterson AFB on many projects in the past 15 years, including historic restoration and adaptive reuse of WWII-vintage buildings, security and force protection projects, and new hangars, maintenance, and material storage facilities. BWSC services included architecture as well as civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering. Listed below are a few of the firm’s projects at WPAFB:
Building 52 Historic Restoration. Building 52 at Wright-Patterson AFB was originally built in 1944 as an aircraft laboratory, and required extensive interior and exterior renovations. The high-tech educational facility now includes classrooms, a large library, student lounge, offices and an auditorium. Renovations included a new metal roof, windows, building systems, fire protection and communications. Project awarded a 2002 Air Force Materiel Command Citation in the Silk Purse category.
Historic Gate Restoration and Upgrade. Transformation of a major entry point (10,000 vehicles per day) into a visually appealing but secure entrance into the base. The new entrance was created by relocating two historic stone gatehouses and walls (circa 1930) from elsewhere on the base and adding a new guardpost and compliant security features. In addition, the final project included road modifications, new traffic signals, improved parking and new visitor parking. This project won the 2005 AFMC Design Awards Citation Award in the Facility Design category.
Adaptive Reuse of Building 2. Conversion of an 80,000-SF building (originally a hangar, then a warehouse) into offices for several Wright-Patterson AFB administrative and support departments. In addition to design, BWSC provided assessment of the existing facility, programming, and construction administration. New HVAC, lighting, power and communication, and fire protection systems were installed and the building was made ADA compliant. |
