C-5 Hangars at Wright-Patterson AFB
Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio

The C-5 is the American military’s largest transport plane and one of the largest aircraft in the world. BWSC, as part of a joint venture with KZF, provided complete design services for two maintenance hangars for C-5 aircraft. Each hangar is a tail-in, high-bay hangar with the latest fire protection and building system technology. Fire protection design included the addition of a 300,000-gal. water reservoir and pumphouse to serve the hangars.

Scheduled Maintenance Hangar (71,635SF): Hangar includes a wheel/tire build-up room with nitrogen generator, parts storage, tool and bench stock room, cleaning room with PD-680 tank for cleaning wheels, hazardous material storage, training/break room, and administrative space. Permanent and mobile scaffolding systems were installed to provide safe access to the aircraft, which is 65 feet high at the tail.

Multi-Purpose Hangar (66,977SF): Designed for various C-5 maintenance tasks: full aircraft wash, spot-paint, and scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance operations. The aircraft wash is a central high-pressure type providing hot and cold water and soap through a 12-pump system to six user stations. In addition to the hangar bay, the hangar includes tool storage, parts and equipment storage, training/ready room, lunch/break room, and administrative space.
