NASA Child Development Center
Huntsville, Alabama

This child development center involved full-service design, including architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering for a 16,000-SF facility with playgrounds designed for children from infant age to pre-schoolers.

The final architectural concept was developed from a preliminary study commissioned by NASA. The structural design features an indoor severe weather protective area for students and faculty, designed according to FEMA guidelines. The mechanical design includes decentralized air handling units utilizing hot water and chilled water hydronics, which allows for cost-effective temperature control of classrooms, while reducing energy requirements to 20% below ASHRAE baseline standards. A radon mitigation system design is included. Hot water is provided by a natural gas fired boiler and chilled water is provided from the central plant. The electrical design includes lighting and power and will implement dimmable electronic ballasts at fluorescent lighting to accomplish daylighting. Occupancy sensors in classrooms will help conserve energy. Landscaping design specified indigenous species that are self-sustaining after the specified establishment period. The project is USGBC registered and has achieved LEED Certified status.
